End of Watch

A Mountie's True Story of War, Kidnappings, and the Breaking Point

What happens when the uniform comes off — and the memories don't? End of Watch is a gripping first-person account tracing a twenty-six-year career that moves from small-town policing in Atlantic Canada to elite national-security operations and international conflict zones. From Newfoundland and northern New Brunswick to Haiti, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Niger, Malone's service reveals a world where crime, war, and global instability collide — and where the decisions carry life-and-death consequences.

Spanning the late 1980s to 2015, Malone recounts fatal accidents, suicides, homicides, child-abuse investigations, kidnappings, and disaster response with honesty and restraint. But the most difficult battles unfold after the call ends. Raised in a profession that demanded silence about mental health, he confronts the cumulative trauma of the job — PTSD, anxiety, and depression — and the ripple effects on family, relationships, and self.

"This book shines an important light on PTSD, moral injury, and the silent burdens carried by so many first responders and their families."

— Amanda Lindhout, New York Times bestselling author of A House in the Sky

"A powerful and deeply human account." — Mischa Kaplan, CEO Team Rubicon Canada

"Beautifully narrated and candid." — Chris O'Neill-Yates, Global Security Specialist, former CBC journalist

"This book should be on the reading list for all new first responders." — Dr. Peter M. German KC, Ph.D., RCMP (Ret.)

Cops in Kabul

A Newfoundland Peacekeeper in Afghanistan

A thrilling personal account of retired RCMP Superintendent William C. Malone, who served as the deputy Canadian police commander in Kabul, Afghanistan, from May 2011 to May 2012. His serious — and at times darkly comic — story of working with military personnel, diplomats, and civil society organizations highlights the extraordinary challenges of trying to bring security and the rule of law to a theatre of war.

From 2003 to 2014, Canada's little-known contribution to the NATO coalition included nearly 300 Canadian police officers who volunteered to train, mentor, and build the capacity of the Afghan National Police. Cops in Kabul puts a human face on that mission — and on the bravery demonstrated by Canadian peacekeepers in one of the world's most volatile places.
